Photographing feelings …
I’ve been reading a book on marketing that’s made me re-think what it is that we actually “do” and how we are different.
In a simple way I thought it was to do with husband and wife photography team, our use of light, effort, service, care, integration into the wedding and attention to detail … yes that’s all important, but in doing some research amongst our past brides as to why they actually booked us an interesting fact emerged.
In the majority of cases the prime reason is nothing to do with any of that (although it does support what we do).
It’s not even to do with the fact that our images look natural, elegant, romantic and our couples look gorgeous … it’s ALL to do with the feeling one gets when you look at the pictures. It’s not about what’s in the photograph but everything to do with what’s behind the image, it’s the unseen, the connection, the emotion, the feeling, the “wedding-geist”.
A number of brides have said looking at our albums that even though they have never met the couples in them they feel as if they already “know” them and they are friends. Isn’t that just wonderful …
Another common comment was that “Every time I look at my album I re-experience the emotion and feelings of the day and can remember exactly what I thinking ….”
So it’s official …. we photograph feelings …. and when we put the story together in a collection of images, our work takes on a powerful life of it’s own.
Now all I have to do is come up with a snappy catchphrase or tag-line according to the marketing book ….”Wedding pictures with soul?” … I somehow don’t think so … our unique proposition is in the pictures we take for everyone to see.
The good thing about this is that I used to worry about being copied by other photographers, but the truth is, what we actually do, can’t be copied … it’s about a way of see-ing, empathy for this “wedding-geist” and our connection with the bride and groom (and guests), and by capturing your personalities, relationship and the dynamic of the day in your images we make a unique contribution to your wedding ….
