Clearwell Castle - Jason and Alex - 2nd February 2008

Fire Escape at Clearwell CastleUnusually for us we met with Alex, the bride, just the evening before and Jason, the groom only on the morning of the wedding. Jason and Alex managed to pull their wedding together in just a few short weeks, leaving no time for us to go through our usual wedding “pre-flight” meetings.

Jason was unable to have his folks over for the wedding as they are home in New Zealand, so the photographs are doubly important.

The late afternoon light was just amazing and the blog pictures are three of our favourites taken around the south-east side of the castle … we were working at turbo speed so as not to stay out in the cold too long.

We try very hard not to make the photography side of the wedding an ordeal … it’s a wedding, not a photoshoot. (But we have to make the pictures look like it was!!)

Thanks to a high level of co-operation from the guests we managed to despatch the “formal” side of the photographs in under 20 minutes.

The shoot rate between Fran and I was some 200 exposures per hour, shooting over 1,000 images during the course of the afternoon which we will edit down to a more manageable four to five hundred elegant, beautiful pictures.

Our wedding photography is about finding and making best use of the light available, capturing expression and joy, combined with composition and artistic “flair”. Skills that even with latent talent take years of experience and practice to hone and develop. (Ultimately the only two controls on a camera that really matter are where you stand and when you press the button! All the other technical stuff has to be a matter of unconscious competence, ie. you just do it automatically without thinking).

Other skills required include finding “lost” cravats (hidden in the Moss Bros secret compartment), tying them as well, fixing button holes, helping guests with their cameras, providing spare batteries and being a general calming influence when everything goes manic.

The light and photo opportunities at Clearwell, whatever the weather, make it one of our favourite venues.

Congratulations Jason and Alex, have a great time on honeymoon and hope the folks back home like the “brief taster” of images on the website. As you will see a great day was had by all.
