Catrin and Sam pre-wedding … Sept 1

Our first weekend without a wedding for a long time, so it gives a brief breather into which to slot a pre-wedding shoot and a couple of (long) viewings, as well as catch up on some album design.

Catrin and Sam’s wedding is at Chepstow Castle in a few weeks time, featuring a hand-fasting ceremony (where tie-ing the knot originates from), horse and carriage plus a double decker bus! Here is a picture taken in the woods just along from our studio …

I particularly like the back and edge-lighting as it separates the couple from the background and picks out the bars on the gate. Frontal lighting is from Fran holding a reflector (collapsible silver disc) pushing light back in, gently feathered to give some modelling (differential light and shade). When the lighting is carefully controlled photographs take on a 3-dimensional look and almost come out of the page.

One of the comments that we hear most in the viewing room is “Wow … I look like a model on a magazine page” … it’s all in the careful control of light (hardly ever achieved with a flash atop the camera as the main light source).

The deriviation of the word photography comes from photo - meaning “light” and graphy meaning “writing” so photography literally means “writing (or painting) with light”.
